Although the origin of the song, "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" is known to be English, there is no knowledge of the composer or date of publication of the song.
The song was originally sung by Christmas carolers. There is a tradition of sharing treats with the carolers who stop by to sing.
Figgy pudding (the main ingredient being, of course, figs) is similar to Christmas pudding. It is a boiled pudding involving dried fruit. The most common type is plum pudding. It can have a round appearance due to being wrapped in cloth and dried on hooks for weeks to help enhance the flavor. No recipe requests, please. I have never made it, and umm... have no desire to.
This is also the only Christmas song with any reference to the New Years holiday.
CHORUS:
We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
And a happy New Year.
Glad tidings we bring
To you and your kin;
Glad tidings for Christmas
And a happy New Year!
Oh bring us some figgy pudding
Oh bring us some figgy pudding
Oh bring us some figgy pudding
Please bring it out here!
Glad tidings we bring
To you and your kin;
Glad tidings for Christmas
And a happy New Year!
We won't go until we get some
We won't go until we get some
We won't go until we get some
So bring it out here!
Glad tidings we bring
To you and your kin;
Glad tidings for Christmas
And a happy New Year!
(CHORUS)

*Fruit Pudding for the Kids*
As a added treat for the kids, make pudding parfaits. In individual cups, spoon some crushed graham crackers. Add vanilla pudding and top with sliced bananas. It isn't figgy pudding, but it is a fruit pudding they will enjoy.
